Coherence and cohesion are key parts of the IELTS Writing score — and one way to make your essays stronger is to pay attention to how paragraphs link together. Good cohesion doesn’t just mean using transition words; it’s about making sure the ideas flow logically from one paragraph to the next.

What Cohesion Means in IELTS Writing

In IELTS writing, cohesion refers to the way your sentences and paragraphs are connected so that your ideas are easy to follow. It includes using linking words appropriately, but it also includes how well each paragraph fits into the overall structure of the essay.

To score well in cohesion:

A Classroom Activity to Build Paragraph Cohesion

One effective method to teach paragraph cohesion is a paragraph re-ordering activity:

  1. Select a text with strong transitions: Choose a short article or paragraph set where the logical flow is clear. The IELTS post uses a film review as an example, but any well-written text will work.
  2. Cut the text into paragraphs: Separate the paragraphs and give each a label (A, B, C, etc.).
  3. Students work in pairs: Students try to decide the correct order of the paragraphs and explain why one paragraph should follow another.
  4. Class discussion: Have students share their reasoning — why one paragraph connects better to the next — and draw a final sequence on the board.

This kind of exercise encourages learners to focus on the connections between ideas, not just individual sentences. It also trains them to think like a reader who is trying to follow a logical progression — exactly what IELTS examiners look for.

Using activities like this can help you notice key cohesion features:

Strong paragraph-level cohesion makes your writing easier to read and more persuasive — and that’s exactly what IELTS examiners reward.

Simple Tips to Build Cohesion on Your Own

If you’re preparing independently (especially for Task 2):

✔ Begin each body paragraph with a clear topic sentence.

✔ Make sure each paragraph deals with only one main idea.

✔ Use a mix of linking words but don’t overload them — they should feel natural.

✔ Check that paragraphs follow a logical order that supports your argument.
